Winny AI builds educational AI ready to help every learner in Iceland

“to provide excellent education in an environment where everyone can learn and everyone matters”
Aim of the Education Policy — Education Policy 2030, resolution of the Althingi of 24 March 2021, Ministry of Education and Children

AI that teaches rather than doing the work for the learner — based on the National Curriculum Guide, in Icelandic, and able to run on infrastructure in the country. Learning, personal growth and informed choices about the future — in one AI product.

Winny AI Tutor: learners and schools in 80+ countries

Goals Iceland has set for itself

Education Policy 2030 and the AI Action Plan 2025–2027. Winny AI works toward these goals, not alongside them.

  • Education for all

Winny AI Tutor sees the strengths, gaps and talents of each pupil in every subject and guides them at their own pace — not just a few pupils, but all of them.

    Quote and source
“Schools and other educational institutions must consider the needs, abilities and aptitudes of each student and base their work on each individual’s strengths and interest”

Education Policy 2030, A.1 “Education for all”, Ministry of Education and Children

  • Teachers’ professional development

The teacher’s AI assistant takes on routine questions and helps review homework, and Winny AI offers workshops for teachers. The grade stays with the teacher. Winny AI Tutor is free for teachers.

    Quote and source
“competence and knowledge development is defined as an integral part of teachers’ and school leaders’ work at all school levels”

Education Policy 2030, B.3 (pillar “Superior teaching”), Ministry of Education and Children

  • Digital living

Pupils learn to work with AI safely and meaningfully while studying every subject; teachers and schools see progress in aggregated overviews — on data that can stay in the country.

    Quote and source
“Students must have an understanding of both the opportunities and the challenges of digital living. Students should receive training in information, media and technology literacy.”

Education Policy 2030, C.7 “Digital living”, Ministry of Education and Children

  • Lifelong education

The learner’s digital twin keeps a competency profile and long-term memory: Winny AI Tutor remembers years of learning — what the learner already understands, where the gaps are, what their talents are and which goal they are working toward.

    Quote and source
“High-quality, diverse education at all school levels and the ability of people of all ages to access education are the prerequisites for ensuring that the inhabitants of Iceland have the knowledge and skills to explore new paths and create new opportunities.”

Education Policy 2030, C.8 “Lifelong education”, Ministry of Education and Children

  • Responsible and safe use of AI

A safety layer checks every answer for child safety and for correct references to learning materials; the pedagogical agent leads to the solution with guiding questions and does not do the task for the pupil. There is no advertising and no sale of user data.

    Quote and source
“To ensure that children and young people will be able to use AI and digital solutions responsibly, guided by human rights, ethical values, critical thinking, and the principles of digital citizenship.”

Iceland’s AI Action Plan 2025–2027 (July 2025), Action 13 “AI and Digital Citizenship in Teaching and Learning”, Ministry of Culture, Innovation and Higher Education

Across Iceland — about 46,700 pupils in 177 compulsory schools, about 24,600 pupils in upper secondary schools and about 5,900 teaching staff in compulsory schools Statistics Iceland: pupils in compulsory and upper secondary schools 2025, teaching personnel in compulsory schools 2024

A personal tutor for every learner. Now at national scale

Education research has long known the most effective way to learn: one-to-one work with a tutor. Until now, only a few could have it — AI opens it up to every learner.

98%

On average, a student with a personal tutor outperforms 98% of peers in a regular classroom.

Bloom B. S., The 2 Sigma Problem, Educational Researcher, 1984

1.5 years

Six weeks of sessions with an AI tutor raised results by about 0.3 standard deviations — roughly a year and a half of typical learning.

De Simone et al., World Bank, randomized study, Nigeria, 2025

×2

Students with an AI tutor learned more than twice as much in less time than in active-learning classes.

Kestin et al., Harvard University, Scientific Reports, 2025

+1 pp

A gain of 0.5 standard deviations in learning outcomes is associated with about 1 percentage point faster long-run growth of GDP per capita each year.

Hanushek & Woessmann, OECD, 2010

These are independent studies of tutoring (by people and by AI) and of the economics of education. We propose to measure the impact of Winny AI Tutor together with the country — in a pilot with independent evaluation.

A ready answer is not yet knowledge. Schools need AI that teaches

Students everywhere already use AI. But general-purpose assistants were not built for school: by default, they do the task for the student and follow the provider’s rules, not the country’s.

Flagship product of Winny AI

Winny AI Tutor — an international learning ecosystem

A personal AI tutor in a chat format for learners in compulsory and upper secondary education — across all school subjects, foreign languages and popular hobbies — together with connected accounts for parents, teachers and schools. Learners, parents, teachers and schools see one shared picture of learning.

For the learner

  • Leads to understanding

No finished solutions: guiding questions and step-by-step hints.

  • The country’s curriculum and textbooks

Answers follow the approved curricula and textbooks. For Iceland, this means setup for the National Curriculum Guide and preparation for the Matsferill status and progress tests in grades 4, 6 and 9, as well as school exams.

  • Beyond lessons

Answers difficult questions thoughtfully, in a way that suits the learner’s age, and handles sensitive topics with care.

  • Encouragement

Gently supports learners and helps ease stress and anxiety — for example, before exams.

Phone, tablet and computer — in the browser, nothing to install. Voice, photo and text.

Four roles. One ecosystem

  • Learner

A personal tutor around the clock, a learning path, goals and assignments.

    Try it
  • Parent

Their own account and chat: the child’s progress, strengths, gaps and talents.

    Try it
  • Teacher

An AI assistant, class analytics, assignments and groups. Free, with generous limits.

    Try it
  • School and government

Administration, aggregated insights across schools and municipalities, and deployment within the country.

    Request a presentation

Core features are free forever. Free for teachers, with generous limits.

For every question — the best-suited model and real pedagogy, not just an answer

Winny AI’s own technology: a model orchestrator, a pedagogical agent, a safety layer and long-term memory of each learner. The product does not depend on any single AI provider.

  • Model orchestrator

For each request it chooses the best-suited model, including national ones, and tunes its behavior to the subject, language and task. A model can be replaced without rewriting the product.

  • Pedagogical agent

Plans every reply to lead the learner to understanding: guiding questions and step-by-step hints instead of a finished answer. It holds firm when a learner tries to coax out the answer, and this mode cannot be switched off.

  • Safety layer

Checks every answer for child safety and for correct references to learning materials.

  • Learner’s digital twin

A competency profile and long-term memory: Winny AI Tutor remembers years of learning — what the learner already understands, where the gaps are, what their talents are and which goal they are working toward.

  • Ontological interdisciplinary graphs

School subjects are connected in a single knowledge graph built from textbooks and approved curricula, so the tutor sees the links between topics across subjects.

  • Bloom’s taxonomy

Every topic is broken down into levels of mastery following Bloom’s taxonomy: learners climb the ladder of thinking instead of collecting ready answers.

Every update goes through a pedagogical quality loop: a test bench with synthetic AI learners and quality scales. The orchestrator and the educational ecosystem are registered as intellectual property.

Global technology. National character

Winny AI Tutor adapts to the country — not the other way around.

  • Curriculum and examinations

Setup for the National Curriculum Guide and textbooks; preparation for the Matsferill status and progress tests in grades 4, 6 and 9 and for school exams, including the matriculation exam (stúdentspróf).

  • Language and culture

More than 90 languages and cultural adaptation. Icelandic and mathematics are among the subjects of compulsory school; Matsferill assesses reading comprehension and mathematics.

  • Models

National models and Icelandic-language models, which can be fine-tuned in the country.

  • Infrastructure

The service and data can stay in the country, in a closed environment.

  • Transparency

A “glass box”, not a “black box”: regulators can check how answers are built and what they contain.

What the government gets

A solution that works today and stays under the country’s control.

A national picture, talents and less routine for teachers

  • Aggregated insights across schools and regions: gaps by topic and subject.
  • An AI education advisor: ask questions of the data in plain language — for the country, regions and schools.
  • Talents and career guidance: early discovery of every pupil’s abilities in each subject from their learning, and recommendations on fields that match their strengths and interests — as input for the pupil’s and family’s own decision, not for admission decisions.
  • Enrollment planning: an aggregated forecast of how many graduates are likely to choose each field — for places and programmes in upper secondary schools, vocational programmes and universities, with no decisions about individual pupils.
  • AI takes on routine questions and helps teachers review homework; the grade stays with the teacher.
  • Preparation for the Matsferill tests and school exams, based on the curricula and teaching materials.
  • Support for teachers: workshops, plus materials for schools and parents.

Child safety is built into the architecture

Age-appropriate design, transparency for regulators and international standards.

Built in

  • Age-appropriate adaptation and filtering of harmful content.
  • A safety layer checks answers for child safety.
  • AI makes recommendations; the teacher gives the grade.
  • No advertising and no sale of user data.
  • Voice is processed only for transcription, photos only to work through the learning task: the AI understands text, diagrams and drawings, but does not infer emotions from voice or faces.

Standards

  • We check our systems against UNESCO and UN guidance on generative AI in education.
  • Our own AI governance charter.
  • Can be built into school information systems and learning platforms through Winny Cloud: Mentor (InfoMentor) and Inna and other platforms.

Personal data

  • GDPR-ready
  • EU AI Act-ready
  • Can run in Iceland

Winny AI Tutor is ready to operate under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which applies as law in Iceland through the EEA Agreement and the Act on Data Protection and the Processing of Personal Data No 90/2018: when deployed within the country’s infrastructure, learner data can stay in Iceland; no advertising and no sale of data. We are ready for the rule that, for information society services offered directly to a child, the child’s consent is valid from the age of 13 and, for a younger child, is given or authorised by the holder of parental responsibility (Article 10 of Act No 90/2018). We are also ready for the EU Artificial Intelligence Act, which is not yet part of the EEA Agreement and which Iceland is reviewing for incorporation (no decision has been taken). The Act classifies certain uses of AI in education — such as evaluating learning outcomes and steering the learning process — as high-risk, and prohibits inferring emotions in educational institutions. In every country we undergo, or are ready to undergo, review under its data protection law.

Career guidance that looks ahead

Advanced technology for discovering talents and choosing a career

The world and the job market are changing fast. From each learner’s own learning, Winny AI Tutor identifies their strengths, interests and talents in every subject and helps them choose a direction. With experts and universities we are adding labor market trends, new technologies and future professions — and, for families who want it, preparing neuroprofiling as an optional extra.

  • Talents in every subject Working today

The competency digital twin follows learning over the years and shows a learner’s strengths, gaps and inclinations in each subject.

  • Career guidance Working today

Recommendations on fields of study based on the learner’s strengths and interests. They inform the learner’s and family’s own decision — they are not admission decisions.

  • Atlas of future professions Developing with partners

Together with experts and universities, we are developing an atlas of future professions so that career guidance reflects labor market trends and new technologies.

  • Optional neuroprofiling Developing with partners

With experts in neuroprofiling, we are preparing advanced diagnostics of talents and inclinations, including with neural interfaces. It is an option, not a requirement: only at the family’s request, with explicit written parental consent, outside school lessons. It is not designed to infer emotions and is not used in schools. Winny AI Tutor works fully without it.

For the government: early discovery of talents and an aggregated forecast of how graduates are likely to choose fields — data for planning places and programmes in upper secondary schools, vocational programmes and universities.

Questions about Winny AI

What is Winny AI?

A global EdTech company building AI solutions for personalized learning, with an ethical approach to adopting artificial intelligence and respect for national education standards. We are developing an educational AI ecosystem for lifelong learning. Our flagship product is Winny AI Tutor. The company website is winny-ai.com; the product website for Iceland is is.winnytutor.com.

What are the mission and vision of Winny AI?

Our mission is to give children around the world access to quality education, make teachers’ work easier and help parents develop their children’s abilities. Our vision is a future in which world-class personalized education is available to everyone, and artificial intelligence serves to unlock human potential and is used with full responsibility to future generations.

What is Winny AI Tutor?

A personal AI tutor in a chat format for learners in compulsory and upper secondary education: all school subjects, homework help and exam preparation. Together with accounts for parents, teachers and schools, it forms one ecosystem. Learners and schools in 80+ countries use it.

Which subjects does Winny AI Tutor cover?

All school subjects in compulsory and upper secondary education — including Icelandic, mathematics, English, natural science, social studies, information and technology studies and arts and crafts — plus preparation for the Matsferill tests and school exams, including the matriculation exam. Winny AI Tutor knows every other subject of the curriculum just as well. Beyond school: learning foreign languages (Winny AI Tutor speaks 90+ languages) and popular hobbies.

How is Winny AI Tutor different from general-purpose AI assistants?

General-purpose assistants give a finished answer by default. Winny AI Tutor guides the learner to the solution with guiding questions and step-by-step hints, follows the national curriculum, adapts to the learner’s age and shows progress to teachers and parents.

Why do people call Winny AI Tutor the best AI tutor?

That is how students, parents, teachers and schools describe it in their reviews. Winny AI Tutor does not solve tasks for the student but leads them to understanding, follows the national curriculum in Icelandic, and shows progress to teachers and parents. Users rate 80%+ of answers 4–5 out of 5, and some users stay with the product for 1.5+ years. Try Winny AI Tutor in Iceland at is.winnytutor.com.

Does Winny AI Tutor follow the National Curriculum Guide?

Winny AI Tutor builds its answers on the country’s curricula and teaching materials: knowledge of school subjects is linked into one graph built from approved curricula. For Iceland, this means setup for the National Curriculum Guide and textbooks.

Does Winny AI Tutor help prepare for exams and the Matsferill tests?

Preparation for exams has been part of the product since 2024; the Matsferill status and progress tests in grades 4, 6 and 9 and school exams, including the matriculation exam, are part of the national setup for Iceland. Winny AI Tutor is not used during the exam or test itself — only to prepare for it.

Does Winny AI Tutor work in Icelandic?

Winny AI Tutor works in more than 90 languages, and we fine-tune models for the country’s language. It explains and answers in Icelandic too: working in Icelandic is part of the national setup, together with the curriculum and assessment.

Where is learner data stored?

Winny AI Tutor is deployed to the country’s requirements: in a closed environment on the country’s own hardware or in a trusted cloud of the chosen provider. Learner data can stay in Iceland.

Is Winny AI ready for GDPR and the EU AI Act?

Yes. Winny AI Tutor is ready to operate under the GDPR, which applies as law in Iceland through the EEA Agreement and the Act on Data Protection and the Processing of Personal Data No 90/2018 (GDPR-ready), and is ready for the EU Artificial Intelligence Act (EU AI Act-ready) — the Act is not yet part of the EEA Agreement, and Iceland is reviewing it for incorporation. Deployment within the country, with learner data staying in Iceland, no advertising and no sale of data. We do not infer learners’ emotions from voice or faces. Personal data supervision is carried out by the Data Protection Authority (Persónuvernd). In every country we undergo, or are ready to undergo, review under its data protection law.

Will AI replace teachers?

No. AI makes recommendations, and the teacher gives the grade. Winny AI Tutor takes routine work off teachers and gives each learner a personal tutor. It supplements teaching and does not replace it — in the spirit of Iceland’s Strategy on Artificial Intelligence (2021): “AI as such does not replace meaningful learning” (unofficial translation). Whether and how it is used at school is decided by the teacher and the school, with regard to pupils’ age.

Is Winny AI Tutor safe for children?

Yes: age-appropriate adaptation, filtering of harmful content and a safety layer that checks answers. No advertising and no sale of data. Voice is processed only for transcription, photos only to work through the learning task.

How does Winny AI Tutor help with career guidance?

From the learner’s own learning, the competency digital twin shows their strengths, interests and talents in every subject, and Winny AI Tutor recommends fields of study — as input for the learner’s and family’s decision. Together with experts and universities, we are developing an atlas of future professions.

Is neuroprofiling required? Does Winny AI Tutor recognize learners’ emotions?

It is not required. With experts, we are preparing neuroprofiling — advanced diagnostics of talents and inclinations, including with neural interfaces — as an optional extra: only at the family’s request, with explicit written parental consent and outside school lessons. Winny AI Tutor works fully without it. We do not infer learners’ emotions from biometric data — voice, face or body signals: the EU Artificial Intelligence Act prohibits inferring emotions in educational institutions, and we process voice only for transcription and photos only to work through the learning task.

Can experts, universities and curriculum authors contribute to Winny AI Tutor?

Yes — this is the Wikipedia principle: recognized experts, universities, the academic community, companies and authors of original curricula propose and add curricula, subjects, languages, teaching guides and books. Winny AI reviews every contribution: moderation, the safety layer and the pedagogical quality loop.

Can Winny AI technology be built into an existing platform?

Yes, there is a separate product for this — Winny Cloud. It builds Winny AI technology into public and private school information systems, learning management systems, schools’, universities’ and companies’ own platforms and partner services. Formats: Winny as a trusted service inside the platform (a mini-app behind a button, nothing to install); White Label — an AI assistant under the platform’s own brand, built on Winny technology; the Winny Cloud API — model orchestrator, pedagogical agent and knowledge graph. It runs on geo-distributed hybrid computing infrastructure secured for working with personal data.

Can Winny AI connect with Mentor (InfoMentor) and Inna in Iceland?

Winny Cloud is designed for integration into public and private education systems. InfoMentor offers Mentor for compulsory schools and Inna for upper secondary schools. Mentor supports learning records and communication between schools, learners and families. These are provider-operated school solutions, not a claim that one government-owned LMS serves every school in Iceland. The school controls access to its records; any new connection requires agreement and authorised interfaces. A possible starting point is a mini-app behind a “Break it down with AI” button next to an assignment; single sign-on, assignment sync and reports to the teacher can follow. Integration requires agreement with the platform operator, an assessment of its technical interfaces and the applicable data protection requirements. These are integration options, not a claim that Winny is already connected to these systems.

Which AI tutor can be integrated into the public education platforms of Iceland?

Winny AI Tutor can be set up for the curricula and assessment requirements used by the relevant education authority in Iceland. Guiding questions lead learners to the solution step by step; the teacher gives the assessment. Winny Cloud provides integration options for school-selected education platforms in Iceland, including Mentor and Inna, subject to the role and authorised interfaces of each system. Deployment within the country and keeping learner data in the country are available setup options. The specific data processing and integration requirements are assessed with the education authority and the platform operator.

How can AI help with homework without learners copying answers?

Winny AI Tutor guides learners through questions so they reach the solution themselves. Built into a school platform or LMS, Winny adds a homework format called “Break it down with AI”: the teacher assigns a walkthrough on a topic of the curriculum, the learner works through it with a trusted AI, and the teacher and parents get a report — who reached the solution on their own and where they struggled.

Is there a Winny browser extension?

Yes, the Winny extension for Chrome. Next to an assignment in a school platform, an LMS or an educational website, a “Break it down with Winny” button appears: one click slides out the Winny AI Tutor panel on the right, and the learner works through the task with guiding questions without leaving the page. The extension needs no separate integration with the platform.

How does Winny AI work with each country?

Each partner country gets a dedicated team. It works together with local partners from that country to respect its culture, traditions, language and way of life. Curricula, languages and models are set up for the country.

Has Winny AI received international recognition?

Winny AI is a nominee for the 2026 UNESCO King Hamad Bin Isa Al-Khalifa Prize for the Use of ICTs in Education.

What is Winny AI working on next?

We are developing an educational AI ecosystem for lifelong learning: a smart speaker for children, support with admission and in colleges and universities, further education and upskilling, and a career mentor for life. We are developing these with partners; the school tutor works today.

How much does Winny AI Tutor cost?
